To follow along with this course, you need Visual Studio 2013 or higher. In this course, I'm using Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition which is free. Additionally, I'll be using a few plugins to increase productivity and enhance the development experience.
First, open up Visual Studio and go to Tools > Extensions and Updates. On the left side, select online and search for Visual Studio Productivity Power Tools. Install the productivity power tools 2013 extension, which brings in useful features. Next, search for Web Essentials and install the plugin. The last optional plugin is ReSharper, which I highly recommend downloading and installing. ReSharper is a commercial plugin that offers time-saving tips and tricks. It costs around 70 to 90 dollars a year. Even though I'm not affiliated with ReSharper, I recommend it to help you excel in your career. You can get a free 30-day trial version of ReSharper to try out the time-saving tricks. If you decide not to get ReSharper, don't worry, I'll show you how to get things done without it.
With our development environment ready, we can now proceed to create our first MVC application.
